When owners ask what the best mid cover pet insurance for dogs looks like, we point to a few essentials: accident and illness cover, hereditary and cruciate protection, a healthy annual limit and fast claims. The PetsOnMe Classic Plan ticks each of those boxes, with up to $10,000 a year and 80% of eligible vet bills paid back. This review sets out what it does well, where it stops, and who it suits.
What the Classic Plan covers
The Classic Plan is built around the conditions that most often lead to large vet bills. Eligible cover includes:
- Accidents, such as fractures, cuts and swallowed objects
- Illnesses, from infections to ongoing conditions
- Hereditary conditions, with a yearly sub-limit and age rules
- Cruciate ligament injuries
- Tests, including radiology and pathology
- Surgery and operating theatre
- Hospitalisation for eligible conditions
- Prescribed medication
- Tick paralysis
- Third party liability
What we think it does well
Broad medical cover at a mid-level premium
Illness, hereditary and cruciate cover are the three things owners most often regret not having. The Classic Plan includes all three, which sets it apart from accident-only cover.
Flexible, owner-friendly terms
You choose your excess, you choose how often you pay, and you can change or cancel your plan without exit fees. Paying annually takes 5% off, and covering two or more pets takes a further 5% off.
Fast claims
Claims are lodged online in a few minutes, and most eligible claims are reimbursed as soon as the next business day.
Easy switching
If you have been with another insurer for 12 months or more with no break in cover, we waive waiting periods for a similar level of cover.
Where the Classic Plan stops
A fair review covers the limits too. The Classic Plan does not include dental illness. If dental cover matters to you, the Deluxe Plan adds select dental illness cover and lifts the annual limit to up to $20,000.
Like all PetsOnMe plans, Classic does not cover pre-existing or congenital conditions, routine and preventative care such as vaccinations and check-ups, elective procedures, breeding and pregnancy, or behavioural problems. Waiting periods apply before some cover starts, with longer ones for hereditary and cruciate conditions. Age limits also apply, and some older dogs may only qualify for the Accidental Plan. The Product Disclosure Statement has the full terms.
Who the Classic Plan suits
- Owners of young, healthy dogs who want broad protection early, since pets can join from 6 weeks old.
- Owners of active breeds where cruciate injuries are a real risk.
- Owners of breeds prone to inherited issues who want hereditary cover in place.
- Budget-aware households who want solid cover without paying for top-tier extras.
Our verdict
For most Australian dog owners looking for mid cover, the Classic Plan offers a strong balance of protection and value. It covers the big medical risks, keeps terms flexible and pays eligible claims quickly. If you want dental illness cover or more headroom each year, step up to Deluxe. If your budget is tight or your dog is older, the Accidental Plan is a practical starting point.
