Mid-level dog insurance gives you protection for both accidents and illnesses, without paying for top-tier extras you may never use. This guide covers how it works, what it includes, and how to get the most from it.
What is mid-level dog insurance?
Mid-level dog insurance, often called accident and illness cover, pays back part of your vet bills when your dog is injured or sick. It sits between accident-only plans and comprehensive plans.
At PetsOnMe, mid-level cover is the Classic Plan: 80% of eligible vet bills back, up to $10,000 a year.
How it works
- Choose your plan and excess. Pick a $100, $200 or $300 excess and pay fortnightly, monthly or annually.
- Visit any vet. Take your dog to any registered vet in Australia and pay the bill as usual.
- Lodge your claim online. It takes a few minutes with your vet invoice.
- Get money back. Most eligible claims are reimbursed as soon as the next business day.
What mid-level cover includes
- Accidents, such as fractures, cuts and car accidents
- Illnesses, such as infections, tummy troubles and skin conditions
- Hereditary conditions
- Cruciate ligament injuries
- Third party liability, if your dog accidentally injures someone or damages their property
- Prescribed medication, tests, surgery and hospital stays for eligible conditions
What it doesn’t include
Like any insurance, there are things mid-level cover won’t pay for. The main ones:
- Pre-existing and congenital conditions
- Routine and preventative care, such as vaccinations and check-ups
- Elective procedures
- Breeding and pregnancy
- Behavioural problems
- Dental illness (available on the Deluxe Plan)
The full list is in the Product Disclosure Statement.
Waiting periods, in plain English
A waiting period is the time between your cover starting and when you can claim for certain conditions. They’re standard across pet insurance and keep cover fair for everyone. Some conditions, like hereditary conditions, have longer waiting periods than others.
Switching insurers? PetsOnMe waives waiting periods if you’ve been with your current insurer for 12 months or more without a break in cover.
Hereditary conditions
Hereditary conditions are passed down through a dog’s bloodline and are often breed-specific. Mid-level cover at PetsOnMe includes them, which is a big reason owners of purebreds and popular crossbreeds choose it. Age rules and a yearly limit apply, so check the details for your dog.
Choosing your excess
- Lower excess ($100): less to pay when you claim, with a higher regular investment.
- Higher excess ($300): a lower regular investment, with more to pay when you claim.
- $200: the middle ground.
Ways to save
- 5% off when you pay annually
- A further 5% off when you cover two or more pets
- No lock-in contracts or exit fees
How to get the most from your plan
- Get covered early. The younger and healthier your dog is at the start, the fewer conditions are pre-existing.
- Keep up with vaccinations and parasite prevention. Good preventative care helps keep claims smooth.
- See the vet promptly when something seems off, and claim soon after.
- Keep your vet records in one place.
- Be upfront about your dog’s health history when you apply.
