    At What Point Is a Dog Considered Senior?

    Your pooch becomes senior when they reach around 8 years old. From 8 years onwards, your four-legged bestie is entitled to our senior dog policies at PetsOnMe. We'll cover them until their very last days so you can give them the best possible final chapter in life, with access to emergency vet care when they need it most.

    Is Euthanasia Included in Senior Dog Insurance?

    Many insurers, including PetsOnMe, offer non-elective euthanasia with their policies. Not sure what non-elective euthanasia means? It's when the vet recommends putting your beloved pooch to sleep because of an untreatable injury, illness, or overall suffering due to a decline in their quality of life.

    Elective euthanasia, on the other hand, isn't included. This is when you make the call to put your fur baby to sleep.

    Is Senior Dog Insurance More Expensive Than Regular Dog Insurance?

    Typically, yes. That's because senior pooches present a lot more health risks and need more trips to the vet than healthy and young pups.

    With more risks comes more required cover, so the annual benefit limit of senior dog insurance is usually higher on average than regular dog insurance. And with a higher annual benefit limit comes higher premiums. But don't be put off by the slightly bigger price tag — you'll actually save $1000s each year on those expensive and unplanned vet visits!

    What Health Issues Aren't Covered With Senior Dog Insurance?

    As with most pet insurance companies, any pre-existing conditions your old pooch has won't be covered under any of our policies. This means you can't make a claim on any treatment related to a health problem that arose before your policy kicked in. Routine care also isn't included.

    Also, the vet bills you can claim all depend on the level of coverage you've got. For example, our Accidental Plan is just for those unexpected accidental injuries, whereas our Deluxe Plan covers a bunch of problems ranging from dental to hereditary disease.

    When you're picking a policy, make sure you double check what it covers and choose the option that best aligns with your senior dog's health needs.

    How Long Do I Have To Wait To Get My Senior Dog Covered?

    If you've signed up for our Accidental Plan, you get instant coverage. As for our Classic and Deluxe Plans, there is a waiting period, so a little patience is needed.

    Expect to wait between 21 and 180 days before your policy activates. If you've held an uninterrupted policy for 12 months or more with a previous provider, we'll treat you to instant coverage.
