The dog insurance plans that balance affordable premiums with solid medical cover are usually mid-level accident and illness plans with a sensible excess. They protect you against the big, unexpected vet bills, like surgery, hospital stays and ongoing illness, without charging you for extras you may never use. At PetsOnMe, that sweet spot is our Classic Plan, with the Accidental Plan as a lean entry point.
What “affordable” should really mean for dog insurance
A low premium on its own is not a bargain if the plan leaves you exposed when something serious happens. Real value comes from the gap between what you pay each month and what you are protected against. Vet bills for a broken leg, a swallowed toy or a sudden illness can run into the thousands. A plan that covers those moments is doing its job.
So when you shop around, ask two questions. What will this plan pay for if my dog needs surgery or a hospital stay? And how much of the bill will I carry myself?
The levers that shape your premium
You have more control over your premium than you might think. These are the main levers:
- Level of cover. Accident-only plans sit at the lower end. Accident and illness plans ask a little more each month and protect against far more.
- Annual benefit limit. A higher yearly limit gives more headroom for a bad year, with a higher premium to match.
- Excess. A higher excess usually means a lower premium. PetsOnMe lets you choose $100, $200 or $300.
- How you pay. Paying annually with PetsOnMe takes 5% off, and covering two or more pets takes a further 5% off.
- Your dog’s age and breed. These affect risk, so they also affect your premium and which plans are open to you.
Where the Classic Plan hits the balance
For most dog owners, the Classic Plan is where affordability and solid medical cover meet. It covers accidents and illnesses, hereditary conditions (a yearly sub-limit and age rules apply), cruciate ligament injuries, tests such as radiology and pathology, surgery and operating theatre, hospitalisation for eligible conditions, prescribed medication, tick paralysis and third party liability.
Those are the claims that tend to hurt a household budget. Cruciate injuries are common in active dogs. Illness can mean repeat visits and tests. The Classic Plan is built to carry that weight while keeping your premium moderate.
If your budget is very tight, the Accidental Plan still protects you against sudden injuries, which are among the most common reasons dogs end up at the vet. It does not cover illness or hereditary conditions, so it is a starting point rather than full protection.
Smart ways to lower your premium without losing cover
- Pick a higher excess if you can comfortably pay it when you claim.
- Pay annually to take 5% off your premium.
- Cover all your pets together for a further 5% off.
- Get covered while your dog is young. Pets can join from 6 weeks old, before conditions develop that could later be treated as pre-existing.
- Switch without starting over. If you have been with another insurer for 12 months or more with no break in cover, PetsOnMe waives waiting periods for a similar level of cover.
What affordable plans usually leave out
Every pet insurance plan has exclusions, and knowing them upfront avoids surprises. PetsOnMe plans do not cover pre-existing or congenital conditions, routine and preventative care such as vaccinations and check-ups, elective procedures, breeding and pregnancy, behavioural problems, or dental illness (except the select dental cover in the Deluxe Plan). Waiting periods also apply before some cover starts. The full details are in the Product Disclosure Statement.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most affordable way to insure my dog?
An accident-only plan with a higher excess, paid annually, usually gives the lowest premium. For broader protection at a moderate premium, a mid-level plan like the Classic Plan is a strong middle ground.
Is a higher excess a good idea?
It can be, if you can comfortably pay it at claim time. A higher excess lowers your premium, but you carry more of each eligible vet bill.
Does PetsOnMe lock me into a contract?
No. There are no lock-in contracts or exit fees. You can change or cancel your plan, though upgrades are subject to age limits and waiting periods start again.
How quickly are claims paid?
You can lodge a claim online in a few minutes, and most eligible claims are reimbursed as soon as the next business day, subject to the terms in the PDS.
Ready to get covered?
Solid cover does not have to stretch your budget. You can compare PetsOnMe plans online in a few minutes, or call our team on 1300 489 873 for a hand choosing the right level of protection.
