Everything You Need To Know About Pre-Existing Conditions at PetsOnMe

Pre-existing conditions can be a grey area, especially for newbie pet parents — but don’t worry, we’ll break down everything you need to know right here.

So, what are pre-existing conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are health issues that popped up before your fur baby’s policy started. You can’t claim any ongoing treatment for them on your policy once it starts and during the applicable waiting periods.

PetsOnMe does not exclude eligible conditions that are fully cured, temporary and have no relation to an underlying condition.

Gone for our Accidental Plan? You coverage will commence at midnight on the date your policy started, with no waiting periods for accidental injuries. If you’ve chosen an accident and illness policy, like our Classic or Deluxe Plans, you’ll need to wait between 21 and 180 days before certain conditions can be claimed.

We’ll ditch our applicable waiting periods and get you covered sooner if you can show us that you’ve held an uninterrupted policy for 12 months or more with your previous pet insurer. This means you don’t have to take the risk of re-sitting new waiting periods just because you want to make the move to PetsOnMe.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I Avoid Pre-Existing Exclusions?

Any health problems your furry friend had before their policy kicked in are counted as pre-existing. So, the sooner you get your pet covered, the fewer pre-existing exclusions they'll likely have.

You can get your pets covered as soon as they reach six weeks old. We've got puppy and kitten plans made just for youngsters — you get to enjoy two months of free cover if your fur baby is younger than one year. And don't worry, we didn't forget about the grown up pets. Cats and dogs aged one year or more get a month of cover on the house.

Where Can I Find Out What Conditions Are Eligible for Cover?

You'll find all the important stuff about your policy, like what conditions are eligible to claim, your coverage level, and terms and conditions, in the product disclosure statement (PDS), at the bottom of our website.

Whenever you're unsure about something to do with your policy, your PDS is the place to look. Some common eligible conditions you can claim include accident and illness treatment, prescribed medication, third-party liability, hospitalisation, hip dysplasia, and more. To make a claim, head to our portal and get reimbursed as soon as the next business day.

How Do I Know if My Dog or Cat Has Pre-Existing Chronic Conditions?

If you've welcomed home a new four-legged family member and want to know if they have any pre-existing conditions, you'll need to do a little digging and request their medical records from any vets they were previously treated by. If you got your fur baby from a rescue shelter, they should provide you with a full breakdown of your pet's medical history.

Any pre-existing conditions they've got on their medical records won't be covered by your policy. But, any new health problems that pop up once you're covered might be eligible to claim, depending on the level of cover you have and the terms and conditions of your insurer.

What Does Condition Limit Mean in Pet Insurance?

In the world of pet insurance, the condition limit is the maximum amount your insurer will cover for a specific condition during the policy period. It applies per condition rather than in total across all claims. They also reset when your policy renews. The only per condition limits that PetsOnMe has is for Hereditary Conditions - which is $2300 per year on the Classic plan and $3800 on the Deluxe Plan. The Deluxe Plan has a bonus inclusion of Dental Illness coverage which is $500 per year.

You can find out everything you need to know about condition limits in your product disclosure statement (PDS).

What Are Temporary Pre-Existing Conditions & Can I Claim Them?

Temporary conditions are short-term health problems, like ear infections and UTIs. In some cases, they won't be counted as pre-existing conditions, but only if it to has no relation to an underlying condition and was previously fully cured.

If the condition completely clears up and doesn't come back until your policy starts and the waiting periods have been served, you may be able to claim it if it pops up in the future.
